Another year of the Olympic Games that's summer, that is, has finally come and go and they were a lot of things going on in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games held at Beijing, China.
First off, this is "general" worthy, but now "sports" worthy, but still "general" worthy.
Second, we got Olympic records being broken, world records being smashed time and time again, and many more. People are starting to discuss about the first week, a swimmer, and the second week, a sprinter.
- On the swimming events, the man that achieved and won eight gold medals, the record of most gold metals won at a single Olympics is United States Of America's own Michael Phelps. He has shattered seven of his swimming events in world record fashion and one swimming event in Olympic record fashion. He has now surpassed Mark Spitz that held the previous gold metal total of seven. He also gotten the most career gold medals for an Olympian. His nickname is "The Baltimore Bullet".
August 10th was the 400 metre individual medley final with a world record time of 4.03.84 [34] and the Gold Medal.
August 11th was the 4 x 100 metre freestyle relay with a word record time of 3.08.24 [35] and the Gold Medal.
August 12th was the 200 metre freestyle final with a word record time of 1:42.96 [36] and the Gold Medal.
August 13th, the first event of the day was the 200 metre butterfly final with a world record time of 1:52.03 [37] and the Gold Medal.
August 13th, the second event of the day was the 4 x 200 metre freestyle relay final with a world record time of 6:58.56 [37] and the Gold Medal.
August 15th was the 200 metre individual medley final with a world record time of 1:54.23 [38] and the Gold Medal.
August 16th was the 100 metre butterfly final with an Olympic record of 50.58 [39] and the Gold Medal, just one hundredth of a second.
August 17th was the 4 x 100 metre medley relay final with a world record time of 3:29.34 [40] and the Gold Medal.
- On the Track and Field Athletics sprinting events, the fastest man that ran in the 100 metres and the 200 metres EVER is Jamaica's Usain "Lightning" Bolt. Mr. Bolt holds the Olympic and world records for the 100 metres at 9.69 seconds (previous record of 9.72 seconds was set in Feburary 2008 by himself) and the 200 metres at 19.30 seconds (previous record of 19.32 seconds was set in 1996 by Michael Johnson). Plus, with the 4 x 100 metre relay, along with his teammates Nesta Carter, Michael Frater and former world record holder Asafa Powell, they clocked a world record time of 37.10 seconds, all set at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Bolt became the first man to win all three events at a single Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984, and the first man in history to set world records in all three at a single Olympics. His name and achievements in sprinting have earned him the media nickname "'Lightning' Bolt".
Third, are you willing to discuss about the country that hosted these 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing? At the People's Republic of China? China themselves? Well, they are dominating the Medal Standings scene for the "Gold" medals with 51 of them. China overall got a total of 100 medals. The United States Of America didn't do all that bad at all racking up first overall with a total of 110 medals. The Chinese got 51 Gold, 21 Silver, and 28 Bronze while the Americans got 36 Gold, 38 Silver, and 36 Bronze. Russia, Great Britain and Australia rounded the Top 5 in overall total of medals.
Fourth, as for our country, Canada? They did pretty good with a total of 18 medals, better than their totals they got from the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympic Games from Sydney, Australia and Athens, Greece respectfully. They got 3 Gold, 9 Silver, and 6 Bronze medals. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with Canada's performance in this year's Summer Olympics, that's for sure. Canada ranks 14th overall in total medal count.
Do you think that this is the greatest Olympic Games ever? Will it be in the history books? What do you think of the Opening Ceremonies and the Closing Ceremonies that China did? Was it really impressive? The fireworks? The Chinese acts?
