John Carmack predicts that the next generation of consoles could emerge sooner than previously thought, and that Sony could be the first to take things forward.

In an interesting interview with Polish website CD-Action online the Carmack predicts that Sony will launch its next generation console before Microsoft.

When the PS3 was released Microsoft’s Xbox 360 already had a years head-start, something Sony will seek to avoid, according to Carmack.

“The whole jockeying for who’s going to release the first next gen console is very interesting and pretty divorced from the technical side of things,” he said.

“Whether Sony wants to jump the gun to prevent the same sort of 360 lag from happening to them again seems likely.”

He also made the bold prediction that at least one of the consoles could ditch optical media in favour of going all-digital, citing the success of Apple’s App Store and Xbox Live as examples of how it’s done.

“I think that Xbox Live… the advent of that and the App Store with the iPhone are wonderful signs of the future of digital distribution.

“I think there’s a decent chance that one of the next gen consoles will be without optical media… the uptake rates of people who have broadband connects surprised everyone this generation. It’s higher than what the core publishers and even the first party people expected.”

Moving away traditional consoles he went on to speculate about the future of gaming as a whole saying that as time goes by debate will rise over new game experiences with the need for a console in the home such as cloud computing using servers like with OnLive.

“There’ll be questions of whether we shift to a cloud computing infrastructure… lots of interesting questions about whether you have the computing power in your living room versus somewhere else.”

Whether a new console does arrive sooner than many will have predicted don’t expect to see one anytime soon.

With Sony adamant about the PS3’s ten year lifespan and Microsoft’s Project Natal yet to arrive for the Xbox 360 it’ll be a few years yet before we see a new console from either. Nintendo’s also concentrating on new experiences for the Wii with the Vitality Sensor, despite rumours of a Wii HD.
